Neo-Hellene Poets, an Anthology of Modern Greek Poetry, 1750-2018

Poem by Maria Polydouris

SADNESS OF THE DUSK

The roses of the dusk bloomed again tonight

golden, rosy, and purple

they faded tonight shedding their leaves

as I viewed them every evening

and every time I drank their fragrant dew

I got intoxicated by their blooms

their soft and last breath

I consumed each joy to its best.

Yet upon gazing the dusk tonight, I thought

of our love, that someday it might end

and when the roses of the dusk bloomed

golden, rosy, and purple

as they faded tonight shedding their leaves

this evening I got saddened.
